(pmb)... view less

'Most 'Indroductions' into factor analysis fail to give a detailed account of how the analytic task of constructing unobserved 'factors' from observed variables translates into the mathematical problem of finding the Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors of the correlation matrix. Presupposing only elementary knowledge of matrix operations and differential calculus, this article attempts to fill this gap thereby enhancing the understanding of various facets of factor analysis. Two basic techniques, principal components and principal factor analysis, are applied to socio-economic indicators of Schleswig-Holstein communities in 1940.' (author's abstract)... view less
