'The contribution reconstructs the institutional and intellectual configuration which led to the formation of the association Quantum in 1975, it outlines the contribution of Historical Social Research in the development of Sociology and History during the twenty years which followed and it sets the agenda for a furture dialogue between history and sociology in the areas of methodology and theory-building. Historical Social Research provided a valid empirical basis for the reconstruction and analysis of long term trends of social change. Extending the basis of evidence into the sphere of non-economic phenomena, it broadened the basis for inter-temporal and inter cultural comparisons in line with the Rokkanian paradigm, and it created the institutional and intellectual environment for a two-way transfer of methods between history and sociology. With regard to future developments, the author maintains that the social sciences need for historical dates is extending given the growing importance of developental, processual and historical categories and perspectives in recent sociological theory building. With regard to a transfer of methods, Historical Social Research exemplifies the compatibility of hermeneutical and quantitative methods, thus providing an experience from which others may learn.'
