'Without neglecting fundamental differences, the article explores significant ties between the new institutionalism and the sociology of social problems. After presenting core assumptions and research objectives in both fields, we discuss the assumption that cultural accounts profoundly mould social problems and processes of problematization. We focus upon fairness and the language of entitlement on the one hand and rationality and the language of unreason on the other hand. Then, the application of both languages is illustrated empirically by referring to discourses on the topics 'multicultural education' and 'pathological gambling'. We conclude that the sociology of social problems may benefit from incorporating insights from the new institutionalism, and we suggest points of connection for new institutionalist research.'
