(ICD)... weniger

'Most growth models are designed to explain industrial growth. In this paper I construct a model of preindustrial growth which shows the connection between economic development and population growth as a long-run dynamic process cumulating in an 'Industrial Revolution'. I investigate the importance of various determinants of growth with a non-linear, stochastic simulation model of a two-sector economy in which the process of population growth, capital accumulation, and subsistence crises are considered. Originally developed by John Komlos and Marc Artzrouni, the model is based on an neoclassical Cobb-Douglas production function. Capital accumulation happens in only one sector and population grows at a constant rate. If the per-capita output of food is below the subsistence level, stochastically determinated demographic crises occur. Capital is defined very broadly, including physical and human capital, knowledge, and technical and institutional changes. The model shows that an industrial revolution can be interpreted and simulated as a dynamic accumulation of capital, there are a number of ways to bring it nearer to historical reality. Random external shocks can be built into the model, the savings rate can be made variable, and the possibility of depreciation of destruction of capital can be considered. The paper focuses on issue widening the definition and scope of determinants of economic growth, and exploring the models sensitivity to these changes. What are consequences for the simulation and its results?' (author's abstract)... weniger
