(ICA)... view less

'Denunciation normally is defined as a voluntary covert act against other people by non-professionals. An investigation of about 70 former inmates interned in Soviet Special Camps in Germany in the immediate post-war period shows that this definition is problematical. Most of them stated that they had been denounced, but what they meant by this scarcely accords to the definition given above. Careless talks, political motives, fear and open, violent repression were all factors in the complex process of denouncing or becoming denounced. Until now, research into denunciations has paid too little attention either to the victims or to the political and personal consequences of denunciation. This life-history interview project demonstrates the long term effects of denunciation: suspicion not only in the administration of justice, in politics, in the public media but also in society in general and even in the local neighbourhood and the extended family. Indeed, most informants knew their victims, and sometimes the victims themselves became informants.' (author's abstracts)... view less
