'Concerning the triad of political systems-- totalitarianism-authoritarianism-democracy - political science has, so far, tackled the concept of authoritarianism the least. On the one hand, this has lead to an unclear distinction in comparing other types of power, which has caused problems when it has come to classifying the systems of 'failed democratizations'. On the other hand, the limited treatment of this topic has resulted in generally underdeveloped catalogues of criterions for the definition and typologization of authoritarian regimes. Considering the extremely different social requirements of authoritarianisms, it becomes apparent very quickly that a classification of authoritarian systems is impossible. Yet, on the basis of different dimensions of authoritarianism, a typologization can be achieved. The relevant dimensions concern the social (modern - non-modern), state (weak - efficient state), legal (constitutional - non-constitutional), pluralistic (civil society - other variations of pluralism), and institutional (governmental system, electoral system etc.) levels. On the basis of this typology, statements can be made on the options of development of authoritarian systems.' (author's abstract)|... view less
