The globalization of qualitative research: challenging Anglo-American domination and local hegemonic discourse

Abstract

In den letzten Jahrzehnten gab es zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen zu den Praktiken und dem Stand qualitativer Sozialforschung auch außerhalb des angloamerikanischen Zentrums. Viele dieser Veröffentlichungen sind deskriptiv und befassen sich mit Überblicken und Entwicklungspfaden qualitativer Forschung in unterschiedlichen Ländern. In jüngster Zeit haben Forschende aus der "Peripherie" allerdings begonnen, eine gemeinsame professionelle Identität herauszubilden gegenüber dem angloamerikanischen Zentrum und sowohl dessen Dominanz als auch die Trennung zwischen Peripherie und Zentrum infrage zu stellen. Allerdings sind die Anstrengungen zur Entwicklung einer gemeinsamen Identität noch in ihren Anfängen begriffen. In meinem Beitrag schlage ich einen globalen und zugleich lokalen Analyserahmen vor, um eine solche globalisierte qualitative Forschung voranzutreiben: Forschende in der Peripherie sollten zugleich die angloamerikanische Vorherrschaft herausfordern und lokale hegemoniale Diskurse stiften. Ich gebe Anregungen, was Forschende in der Peripherie und im Zentrum tun könnten, um die gegenwärtige Arbeitsteilung aufzubrechen, bei der Theorien und Methoden im Zentrum generiert und in den Peripherien lediglich konsumiert und reproduziert werden. In diesem Zusammenhang muss der Indigenisierung qualitativer Sozialforschung in den Peripherien größere Aufmerksamkeit als bisher geschenkt werden.

Over the past decades, scholarly interest has led to publications on the practices and development of qualitative research (QR) in countries outside of the Anglo-American core. Much of the writing is descriptive, providing an overview of the QR path and development in a particular country. Recently, qualitative researchers in the periphery have begun to articulate a collective professional identity in relation to the Anglo-American core by questioning both the dominance of the Anglo-American core and the current divide between QR in the core and the periphery. To date, insufficient effort has been made to develop this collective professional identity in order to overcome Anglo-American domination in the periphery and to indigenize QR. In this article, I propose a globally-informed, locally-situated analytical framework as a means of developing a globalized QR (GQR). I argue that qualitative scholars in the periphery must simultaneously confront Anglo-American domination and local hegemonic discourses. I discuss what scholars in the core and periphery can do to lead to a shift in the current division of labor that sees scholarship in the core producing theory and methods while those in the periphery consume and reproduce it. More attention needs to be paid to the indigenization of QR in the periphery.

El interés escolar ha creado, en las décadas pasadas, publicaciones sobre las prácticas y el desarrollo de la investigación cualitativa (IC) en países fuera del centro anglo-americano. La mayoría de estos escritos son descriptivos y brindan una visión general de la ruta de la IC y su desarrollo en países en particular. Los investigadores cualitativos en la periferia han empezado, también recientemente, a articular una identidad profesional colectiva con relación al centro anglo-americano al cuestionar tanto esta dominación anglo-americana y la división actual entre la IC en el centro y la periferia. A la fecha, el esfuerzo realizado no ha sido suficiente para desarrollar esta identidad profesional colectiva para superar la dominación anglo-americana en la periferia e indigenizar la IC. En este artículo, propongo un marco analítico localmente situado y globalmente informado como medio para desarrollar una IC globalizada. Sostengo que los académicos cualitativos de la periferia deben simultáneamente enfrentar la dominación anglo-americana y los discursos locales hegemónicos. Planteo que los académicos del centro y de la periferia pueden producir un cambio en la actual división del trabajo que ve a la escolaridad del centro produciendo teoría y métodos mientras que los académicos de la periferia los consumen y reproducen. Se necesita poner más atención a la indigenización de la IC en la periferia.
