'The goal of the research project is to explore how tinnitus patients create subjective illness-theories and to reconstruct whether and how these theories influence their illness-behavior. The study is based on 19 semi-structured interviews with tinnitus out-patients, analyses were done using methodical hermeneutics. The coding and interpretation of the data was realized in terms of Grounded Theory in combination with qualitative content analysis. Four typical ways of coping were found, each of them determined by a corresponding mode of self and world interpretation. The systematic inclusion of the explicit and implicit content of the lay-theories of tinnitus-patients, as well as of their respective biographical backgrounds, can be a substantial contribution to the prevention of processes of tinnitus-decompensation.'
