'Ideas about occupational plans develop over a long time. This process is multi-faceted and starts already in childhood. Therefore, it should be encouraged and fostered at an early point of development. A central aspect of this developmental process is the conceptual knowledge about occupations. The study explored whether the aspects interest and ability, which play an important role in later vocational development, were known by primary school children and, if not, whether a focused intervention could enhance their availability. Based on the principles of Dynamic skill theory by K.W. Fischer an intervention to expand conceptual knowledge about occupations was developed. The study included 34 fourth grade children. Results showed the intervention to be successful. The comparison of the first and second measurement revealed a significant difference in the number of job aspects that children could name. Furthermore, they managed to integrate the presented aspects interest and ability into their responses.' (author's abstract)... view less
