Review Essay: Zur Relevanz des ethnografischen Blicks bei der sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Erforschung von Orten und Räumen

Abstract

Angesichts des so genannten spatial turn in den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften haben Sozialgeografinnen zurecht vor einer Renaissance positivistischer Raumvorstellungen gewarnt: Von real existierenden Orten und Räumen lassen sich keine "unmittelbaren" Rückschlüsse auf das Soziale ziehen, vielmehr sind diese selbst in jeder Hinsicht sozial konstituiert und vermittelt. In ihrer äußerst lesenswerten ethnografischen Studie zur ästhetischen und soziopolitischen Um- und Neugestaltung des Berliner Alexanderplatzes kann Gisa WESZKALNYS zeigen, wie sich ein radikal konstruktivistisches Konzept von Orten und Räumen forschungspraktisch umsetzen lässt. In Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Studie wird im Folgenden argumentiert, dass eine ethnografische Forschungsperspektive sowohl in erkenntnistheoretischer als auch in methodischer Hinsicht besonders geeignet ist, Orte und Räume jenseits ihrer vermeintlichen "Tatsächlichkeit" als prinzipiell kontingente soziale und genuin politische Praxis zu rekonstruieren.

Given the so-called "spatial turn" in the social sciences and cultural studies, social geographers have rightfully been cautioning against positivist notions of space and place: We cannot simply deduce the social from spatial reality - on the contrary, this reality is in every respect itself socially constituted and mediated. In her highly recommended study on the esthetical and socio-political reshaping of Alexanderplatz in Berlin after 1990, Gisa WESZKALNYS has shown how a radical constructivist concept of place and space can be transformed into practical research. This review essay argues that an ethnographic research perspective is of particular relevance both epistemologically as well as methodologically if the aim is to reconstruct places and spaces beyond their perceived "actuality" in terms of a fundamentally contingent social and essentially political practice.

Teniendo en cuenta el llamado "giro espacial" en las ciencias sociales y estudios culturales, los geógrafos sociales han llamado la atención razonablemente en contra de las nociones positivistas de espacio y lugar: No podemos simplemente deducir lo social de la realidad espacial, al contrario, esta realidad está socialmente constituida y mediada por sí misma. Gisa WESZKALNYS ha demostrado cómo un concepto constructivista radical del lugar y del espacio se puede transformar en investigación práctica, en su ampliamente recomendado estudio sobre la reorganización estética y socio-política de Alexanderplatz en Berlín después de 1990. Este ensayo argumenta que una perspectiva de la investigación etnográfica es de particular relevancia, tanto epistemológicamente como metodológicamente, si el objetivo es la reconstrucción de lugares y espacios más allá de su percepción de "realidad" en términos de una práctica política, fundamental y esencialmente, contingente y social.
