(Autorenreferat)... view less

'The economic incentives of modern professional football establish a stable pattern of short-term success orientation producing a great pressure upon actors to take advantage of violations of rules during the game. The range of norm-violations, however, is limited by the norm of professional solidarity and by civilising inhibitions. These constraints lead to covered and disciplined forms of fouls and of acts of borderline violence. Deviant behaviour becomes a frequent and regular behaviour which overburdens the control function of the referee. The interplay between considerable dynamics of football and high frequency of instrumental and strategic fouls demand too much of the referee's control capacity implying a great extent of non-decisions and contingent sanctioning. These conditions of high dark figures and selective and contingent sanctions often result in an arbitrariness transforming a football match in specific cases of being an the verge into a hazard.'
