'The article draws on findings of stress and coping theories to explain perceptions and behaviour under conditions of low income. An analysis of 25 loosely structured interviews with recipients of low income in two large cities in the west and east of Germany reveals the predominance of the economic background as a source of psychological strain. Case studies of stressful everyday situations demonstrate the effect of such indirect consequences to low income as the fear of loss of social standing which accompany economic difficulties proper. In coping with their hardships a number of respondents display a preponderance to passive and merely psychological reactions at the expense of active strategies focused on sources of stress, owing to a perception of powerlessness, loss of control, and external determination of relevant situations.'
