Abstract

"In context of recent debates about the Internet as a universal information and knowledge medium the author reexamines former approaches to collecting, recording,, organizing, and communicating the 'global knowledge', particularly centralized libraries, universal encyclopedias and paper-, microform- or electronic- based document networks. The brief historical survey of visions and realized architectures of the 'knowledge organization of the world' put the focus on constantly recurring leitmotivs, common features, trade-offs, and structural problems. But it reflects as well the considerable differences of underlying media technologies and varying motivations of promotors and institutions involved. With regard to the various social, cultural and political embeddednes of former 'information universes' it is concluded, that the history of global knowledge bases should not be reduced to a mere prehistory of the Internet." "Der Beitrag nimmt Leitbilddiskurse um das Internet zum Anlaß für einen Rückblick auf frühere Ansätze einer Sammlung, Ordnung und Kommunikation des Weltwissens. Es werden anhand einer universalhistorischen Skizze von Visionen bzw. realisierten Architekturen einer globalen Wissensorganisation epochenübergreifende Leitmotive, strukturelle Gemeinsamkeiten und vor allem durchgängige Zielkonflikte und Strukturprobleme herausgearbeitet. Doch zugleich soll der Blick auf die oft beträchtlichen Unterschiede der jeweiligen Leitmedien, die verschiedenen Motivationen der wechselnden Träger sowie auf die abweichende politisch-gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Einbettung der Wissensordnungen deutlich machen, daß sich frühere Informationsuniversen nicht auf eine bloße Vorgeschichte des Internet reduzieren lassen."
