Systematic versus interpretive analysis with two CAQDAS packages: NVivo and MAXQDA

Abstract

Ziel diese Beitrags ist der Vergleich zweier Programme zur computergestützten Datenanalyse (NVivo und MAXQDA). Hierzu wurden die Daten aus einer auto-fotografischen Studie genutzt, wobei weniger die Daten selbst von Interesse waren, sondern der genutzte methodologische Ansatz (Grounded-Theory-Methodologie [GTM]) und dessen Umsetzung mithilfe der Software. Relevante Vergleichskriterien waren die Nähe zu den Daten, die Unterstützung von Kodieren und Memoschreiben sowie Möglichkeiten der Bezugnahme zwischen Daten, Kodes und Memos im Sinne des gewählten Methodik. Wesentlichstes Ergebnis war, dass für die GTM interpretative Prozesse von hervorgehobener Bedeutung sind, und dass MAXQDA diesen spezifischen Ansatz besser unterstützt als NVivo.

The purpose of this study is to compare two different Computer Assisted Qualitative Data AnalysiS (CAQDAS) packages (NVivo and MAXQDA) on a specific aspect. The same data from an auto-photographic study is analyzed using the same approach to make the comparison. The comparison is not based on a data oriented evaluation, but the methodological approach used constitutes the basis for the evaluation. The criteria for the evaluation of these tools are: closeness to the data, ease of coding and memoing, and the interrelationship among the data, code and the memo which were derived from the methodological approach. The first level coding process was accomplished using Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM) with two different CAQDAS packages. As for the result, in the GTM interpretation is crucial and MAXQDA supports the interpretive style better than NVivo.

El propósito de este estudio es comparar, en un aspecto específico, dos diferentes paquetes de Análisis Cualitativo de Datos Asistido por Computadora: NVivo and MAXQDA. Se analizan los mismos datos de un estudio auto-fotográfico utilizando el mismo enfoque para hacer la comparación. Ésta no se basa en una evaluación orientada a los datos, sino que el enfoque metodológico utilizado constituye la base para la evaluación. Los criterios para la evaluación de estas herramientas son: cercanía con los datos, facilidad de codificación y elaboración de memos, y la inter-relación entre los datos, códigos y memos, que se deriva del enfoque metodológico. El primer nivel del proceso de codificación se realizó mediante la metodología de teoría fundamentada (MTF) con los dos diferentes paquetes. En cuanto a los resultados, la interpretación en la MTF es crucial y MAXQDA apoya mejor el estilo interpretativo que NVivo.
