Stories Matter: conceptual challenges in the development of oral history database building software

Abstract

Stories Matter ist eine neue Software zum Aufbau von Oral-History-Datenbanken, die von einem interdisziplinären Team von Geschichtswissenschaftler/innen und Programmierer/innen konzipiert wurde, das dem Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling der Concordia University in Montreal zugehört. Die Software ermöglicht es Wissenschaftler/innen, mit ihren Interviews weiter auf sehr effektive Weise "zu interagieren", ohne dass der größere lebensgeschichtliche Kontext – wie im Falle der Fixierung auf die bloße Transkription – verloren geht. Stories Matter is new oral history database building software designed by an interdisciplinary team of oral historians and a software engineer affiliated with the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It encourages a shift away from transcription, enabling oral historians to continue to interact with their interviews in an efficient manner without compromising the greater life history context of their interviewees. This article addresses some of the conceptual challenges that arose when developing this software.

Stories matter es un nuevo software de construcción de una base de datos de historia oral, diseñado por un equipo interdisciplinario de historiadores orales y un ingeniero en software afiliado al Centro de Historia Oral y Narración Digital de Cuentos de la Universidad Concordia en Montreal, Quebec, Canadá. Alienta a un alejamiento de la transcripción, permitiendo a los historiadores orales seguir interactuando con sus entrevistas de manera eficiente sin comprometer la grandeza del contexto de la historia de vida de sus entrevistados.
