'This article comments firstly on the importance of the variable 'occupation' for household- and family research within the theoretical framework of life style research and the theory of socio-cultural inequality. Secondly, it explains the problems of interpreting and comparing existing occupational classification schemes. Thirdly, a scale is introduced for making the values of different occupational classification schemes comparable and interpretable in a relevant way for household- and family research using 'cultural capital' as the main dimension of a reclassification. The construction and testing of the scale is done with data from the 1988 Familiensurvey des Deutschen Jugendinstitutes (Family Survey conducted by the German Youth Institute) and the 1987/88 National Survey of Families and Households conducted by the Center for Demography and Ecology of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.'
