Für eine poststrukturalistische Perspektive auf das Machen und die Macht von Karten: Replik auf Ball und Petsimeris

Abstract

This paper takes the recent article "Mapping Urban Social Divisions" by BALL and PETSIMERIS, published in FQS, as a starting point for discussing the role of maps for visualizing knowledge and as an object of research in the social sciences. The paper draws on the theoretical approach of "critical cartography" which changed the conception of maps and the practice of mapmaking since the early 1990s. Critical cartography is deeply informed by a poststructuralist critique of knowledge and truth. Maps, no longer conceptualized as graphical images of reality where the only concern is the quality of the data, are powerful actors in the social construction of reality.

Este artículo toma como punto de partida para discutir el papel de los mapas para visualizar conocimiento y como un objeto un objeto de investigación en las ciencias sociales, el recientemente publicado por FQS "Hacer mapas de las divisiones sociales urbanas" por BALL y PETSIMERIS. Se fundamenta en el enfoque teórico de la “cartografía crítica” que cambia la concepción de los mapas y la práctica del mapeo desde el inicio de los años 90s. La cartografía crítica está profundamente orientada por la crítica postestructuralista del conocimiento y la verdad. Los mapas, no son más conceptualizados como imágenes gráficas de la realidad en las que la preocupación única es la calidad de los datos, sino como poderosos actores en la construcción social de la realidad.

Der Text nimmt den jüngst in FQS erschienenen Aufsatz "Mapping Urban Social Divisions" von BALL und PETSIMERIS zum Anlass, die Rolle von Karten als Medium der Visualisierung sozialwissenschaftlichen Wissens sowie als Objekt sozialwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen zu diskutieren. Dabei wird Bezug genommen auf Ansätze der Critical Cartography, die seit den 1990er Jahren das Verständnis von Karten und der Praxis des Kartografierens durch eine poststrukturalistische Kritik verschoben haben. Statt Karten als ein grafisches Abbild von Wirklichkeit zu begreifen, bei denen lediglich die Güte der zugrunde liegenden Daten kritisch zu betrachten ist, werden sie dabei zu machtvollen Akteuren der sozialen Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit.
