'Ausgangspunkt für den vorliegenden Beitrag bilden die Lernerfahrungen, welche die beiden Autorinnen während der Durchführung des Projekts der Wiener EQUAL-Entwicklungspartnerschaft 'Managing Diversity - Empowerment durch Vielfalt' (2002-2005) gemacht haben. Der Beitrag widmet sich den Herausforderungen, die bei der Einführung von Managing Diversity als neues Konzept in Unternehmen entstehen. Ziel ist es, zum aktuellen Erkenntnisstand in Bezug auf die Umsetzung von Managing Diversity besonders in Österreich beizutragen. Zentrale Fragestellungen betreffen die Definition von Diversity, die Klärung des Grundverständnisses, die von Diversity erfassten Gruppen, sowie die Voraussetzungen für die Entwicklung von Diversity-Kompetenz. Die am Beispiel einer Niederlassung eines multinationalen Konzerns der Metall-Elektro-Industrie untersuchten Annahmen verdeutlichen, dass es noch großer Anstrengungen bedarf, um Managing Diversity als integralen Bestandteil der betrieblichen Kultur zu verankern.' 'Point of departure of this article is the learning experience, from which both authors benefited while carrying out the Vienna EQUAL development partnership project 'Managing Diversity - Empowerment by Diversity' (2002-2005). This article deals with the challenges that arise when introducing Managing Diversity as a new concept at the company level. Our goal is to contribute to current discourses and to enhance the understanding with respect to the implementation of the Managing Diversity tool, particularly in Austria. The main research questions focus on defining diversity, explaining its basic concepts, determining which groups are targeted by diversity, as well as reflecting the preconditions for the development of a diversity competence. Based on the authors' experience with an Austrian subsidiary firm of a multinational corporation in the metal and electronics sector, conclusions are presented, which illustrate that major efforts still are necessary to ensure that Managing Diversity will develop to an integral part of company culture.'
