The non-impact of the direction of comparison on evaluative judgements: the nonreplication of the results of Schwarz & Scheuring (1989)
[journal article]

Schnell, Rainer

Abstract

"The effect of the direction of comparison on evaluative judgements reported by SCHWARZ and SCHEURING 1989 could - in two independent studies - neither be replicated with the original questions and stimuli nor with other stimuli. The results are not distinguishable from random effects. As the total absence of an effect can not be demonstrated, a formalized theory of the process of answering questions as starting point for future empirical investigations seems to be neccessary for a fruitful application of Cognitive Science to survey research."
