Religion und Zivilgesellschaft: zur Theorie und Geschichte ihrer Beziehung

Abstract

"Der Aufsatz argumentiert gegen eine säkularistische Definition von Zivilgesellschaft, indem er die keineswegs ausschließlich negative, sondern ambivalente Beziehung zur Religion herausarbeitet. Hierfür wird zunächst der aktuelle, gleichermaßen globale wie disziplinenübergreifende Diskurs zum Verhältnis von Religion und Zivilgesellschaft beleuchtet, dann - vor dem Hintergrund theoretischer und empirischer Einwände gegen die Säkularisierungstheorie - ein nicht säkularistisches Verständnis von Zivilgesellschaft entwickelt, das schließlich forschungspraktisch an der Geschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts erprobt wird. Deutlich wird dabei die enge Verflechtung von Religion und Zivilgesellschaft inner- und außerhalb Europas, von der bürgerlichen Familie über religiöse Vereine bis hin zur Kolonialmission. Die Fokussierung von Religion rückt von der Forschung bislang zu Unrecht marginalisierte Akteure und Felder zivilgesellschaftlicher Praxis in den Blick: Geistliche, Frauen, Unterschichten, Kolonien. Auf konzeptioneller Ebene erweist sie räumliche und normative Definitionen von Zivilgesellschaft als teilweise säkularistisch. Empirisch revidiert sie die Gleichsetzung von Zivilgesellschaft und bürgerlicher Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert, indem sie auf religiös motivierte klassenübergreifende zivilgesellschaftliche Praktiken aufmerksam macht. In genealogischer Perspektive führt sie die noch immer wirkungsmächtige Dichotomisierung von Religion und Zivilgesellschaft auf die Verflechtung der Entstehung von Theorien der Säkularisierung und der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft zurück. Die Untersuchung der Beziehung von Religion und Zivilgesellschaft erklärt mithin sowohl, warum beide Größen so lange antagonistisch verstanden worden sind, als auch weshalb sich dies künftig ändern sollte." "This paper argues against a secularist definition of civil society, unveiling the relation between religion and civil society as not exclusively negative but rather ambivalent. The paper highlights the global and multidisciplinary current discourse on that subject. It summarises the theoretical and empirical objections to the theory of secularisation and develops a nonsecularist conception of civil society, which is applied to 19th century history. An intimate connection between religion and civil society within and outside of Europe becomes apparent, varying from the bourgeois family to religious associations and to the colonial mission. By focussing on religion, previously marginalised protagonists and spheres of civil society come to the fore, namely, clerics, women, members of the lower classes and colonies. On the level of concepts, spatial and normative definitions of civil society appear as being partly secularist. The identification of civil society with 19th century bourgeois society is challenged by pointing to religiously motivated processes of self-organisation across social classes. From a genealogical perspective, the influential polarisation of religion and civil society that still exists today can be traced back to the connected formation of theories of secularisation and of the bourgeois society. Therefore, the analysis shows how the relation between religion and civil society was interpreted as antagonistic for such a long time period as well as why this should change in the future."
