For a long time qualitative methods were primarily taught in small groups in a practical and subject-specific way. Research-based learning and research workshops were thus at the center of reflections on teaching practices. As qualitative methods became established in different disciplines, they were increasingly taught in introductory courses, utilizing lectures. This format presents its own challenges for teachers, such as group size, sorting through many voices in a research area, and distance from practice. In this article, we explore these tensions through three disciplinary examples - sociology, education, and health sciences - and illustrate how qualitative social research can be taught in lectures. We begin with a historical overview of the lecture as a teaching format from which we examine how the teaching of qualitative methods has been addressed in the past and how this teaching format has been used. Finally, we summarize the didactic possibilities and limitations of qualitative methods lectures and discuss the need to embed them in a consecutive methods training program.... view less
