Über die Funktionsweise von Plattformen gibt es noch immer viele Missverständnisse. Oft wird ausgeblendet, dass die Daten - die Haupteinnahmequelle der Plattformen - hergestellt werden und damit das Produkt unbezahlter und weitgehend unerkannter digitaler Arbeit sind. Analog zum Fabrikwesen und den Werkzeugen der politischen Ökonomie entwickelt der Autor am Beispiel von YouTube ein Modell, mit dem die Kapitalakkumulation von Plattformen analysiert werden kann. Damit wendet er sich nicht nur an Forschende, sondern auch an Creator*innen und User*innen, die die Mechanismen von YouTube und Co. besser verstehen wollen.... view less

Concerning the research of capital accumulation on digital platforms, the Digital Labour Theory has mostly focused on the unrecognized and unpaid labour of users, who produce both the content for the platforms and data and attention, which the companies running these platforms use as their source of wealth. This focus on users is due to Digital Labour being rooted in the theories of both Operaismo and the feminism of the 70s and 80s, which both focused on the unpaid labour of women in the household of capitalist society. With most digital platforms however - YouTube being a prime example - content does not, in fact, come from the labour of users, but rather of so-called content creators, who for the most part produce content in return for monetary compensation. The model of the data factory this dissertation develops puts this labour of creators back into focus as the source of raw material for the production process of users, who produce the platform’s data and attention commodities and is meant to enable a holistic view of platforms as digital factories.... view less
