Este trabalho propõe um novo olhar sobre o processo de letramento de alunos surdos e sobre a noção de texto, enfatizando a importância do aspecto visual da leitura-escrita como um fator constitutivo desse processo. Dada a característica visual da língua de sinais, a imagem apresenta-se de forma significativa no processo de construção de conhecimento desses alunos. A língua de sinais constitui-se como traço identitário co-relacionado à cultura, portanto, o dizer na língua de sinais constitui a base para o encontro com o objeto escrito na sala de aula. Neste contexto, torna-se necessário, portanto, refletir sobre a concepção de texto e nos distanciarmos da noção de escrita como representativa da oralidade, o que nos afasta de uma concepção grafocêntrica da escrita e nos leva a considerar as ações que se fazem com e sobre a língua (no caso, o português escrito) como práticas discursivas. This study proposes a new way of looking at deaf students' processes of literacy and their notions of text, highlighting the importance of the visual aspect of reading/ writing as a constituent factor in said process. Because of the visual characteristic of sign language, images are meaningful modes in the process of construction of knowledge. Sign language becomes a mark of identity permeating deaf culture, in such a way that the discourse of sign language constitutes the basis for the encounter with writing in the classroom. So, in this context we must both think about concepts of texts and move away from the notion that writing represents oral language. In this way we abandon a graphocentric conception of writing, in favor of considering discursive practices involving language (in this case, written Portuguese).
