A new orientation concerning forms of work Organization is considered a fundamental prerequisite for the efficient and flexible use of Systems of Computer integrated manufacturing. The majority of CIM components and Systems that are supplied on today's technical market are, however, not constructed for innovations in work Organization, such as decentralization and Integration of functions and tasks. Recent technical developments offer, by contrast, interesting alternatives which are capable of advancing and securing efficient and desirable forms of production work. The following volume has four contributions. The first paper is a discussion of the consequences of technical alternatives for the future of industrial work. Then two contributions from university engineering institutes outline CIM design options for the integration of CAD with NC programming and for shopfloor planning and scheduling which allow to be controlled by production workers. The final contribution presents survey results from producers of shopfloor control centres (Leitstand) and describes different organizational forms around the use of these systems.... view less
