Constructions of collective belongings through art by migrants from Cuba in Germany and South Florida

Abstract

This essay focuses on Cuban immigration to South Florida and Germany. Focusing on two biographies, this essay shall introduce the migration backgrounds and living conditions in the countries of immigration. The construction of ethnic belonging for migrants from Cuba is unquestioningly self-evident for migrants from Cuba both in Germany and Florida. In creating this ethnic belonging, immigrants refer to Cuba's history, culture and art. Strong similarities can be found in these constructions despite the rather different circumstances that the migrants face in their countries of immigration. In terms of the use of art in these constructions, a biographical empirical approach can show how occupation as an artist can either help individuals find solutions for contradictory aspects of life in the country of immigration or help create continuity with the migrants' past prior to their migration.

In diesem Beitrag wird der Fokus auf die Immigration von Kubaner/innen nach Südflorida und Deutschland gelegt. Anhand von zwei Biografien werden die Migrationshintergründe und die Lebensbedingungen in den Einwanderungsländern vorgestellt. Die Konstruktion ethnischer Zugehörigkeit ist für Migrant/innen aus Kuba in Deutschland als auch in Florida fraglos selbstverständlich und wird über den Verweis auf die Geschichte Kubas und auf Kunst hergestellt. Es zeigen sich in diesen Konstruktionen starke Gemeinsamkeiten, trotz der ausgesprochen unterschiedlichen Bedingungen, die die Migrant/innen in den Einwanderungsländern vorfinden. Im Hinblick auf Kunst kann mithilfe eines biografieanalytischen Zugangs aufgezeigt werden, dass die Selbstbetätigung als Künstler/in entweder die Funktion haben kann, nach Lösungen für widersprüchliche Lebensbereiche zu suchen oder aber dazu dient, im Einwanderungsland Kontinuität zur Vergangenheit vor der Migration herzustellen.

Este ensayo aborda la migración cubana a Florida del Sur y a Alemania. Al enfocarse en dos biografías, el ensayo debe presentar los antecedentes de la migración y las condiciones de vida en los países de inmigración. La construcción de pertenencia étnica para los inmigrantes de Cuba es incuestionablemente evidente para ellos, tanto en Alemania como en Florida. Al crear esta pertenencia étnica, los inmigrantes se refieren a la historia y arte de Cuba. Se pueden encontrar grandes semejanzas en estas construcciones a pesar de las diferentes circunstancias que los migrantes enfrentan en sus países de inmigración. En términos del uso del arte en estas construcciones, un enfoque empírico biográfico puede mostrar como el ocuparse como artista puede ayudar a los individuos a encontrar soluciones para aspectos contradictorios de la vida en el país de inmigración o puede crear continuidad con el pasado de los migrantes previo a su migración.
