Auto/Ethnography and the Question of Ethics

Abstract

Auto/ethnography has emerged as an important method in the social sciences for contributing to the project of understanding human actions and concerns. Although the name of the method includes "ethnography," auto/ethnography often is concerned exclusively with an abstract (i.e., undeveloped) and abstracting understanding, and therefore the writing, of the Self rather than the writing of the "ethno." Auto/ethnography, such conceived, is a form of therapy, in the best case, and a form of narcissism and autoerotic relation, in the worst case. But because the Self exists in relation to the world, becomes in and through participation in everyday events, and because the human relation is inherently ethical, there are inherent ethical questions where the Other may come to be harmed as much as the Self.

Auto/Ethnografie hat sich zu einer wichtigen sozialwissenschaftlichen Methode entwickelt, die zum Verständnis menschlichen Handelns beitragen kann. Obwohl die Bezeichnung dieser Methode den Ausdruck "Ethnografie" enthält, ist Auto/Ethnografie oftmals exklusiv mit abstrakt-abstrahierendem Verstehen beschäftigt und daher mit dem (Be-) Schreiben des Selbst anstatt mit dem des "Ethnos". Wird Auto/Ethnografie auf diese Weise verstanden, ist sie im besten Falle eine Therapieform und im schlechtesten Falle eine Form des Narzissmus und ein autoerotischer Akt. Weil das Selbst im Verhältnis mit der Welt existiert, weil es in und durch die Teilnahme mit der Welt entsteht und weil die menschliche Beziehung immer schon ethisch ist, gibt es hierbei auch besondere ethische Fragen, wobei "der Andere" ebenso verletzlich ist wie das Selbst.

La auto/etnografía emergió como un método importante en las ciencias sociales para contribuir al proyecto de entender las acciones y asuntos humanos. Aunque el nombre del método incluye "etnografía", muchas veces la auto/etnografía se dedica exclusivamente a un entender abstracto (lo que significa no desarollado) y a un entender que abstrae y por eso el escribir acerca del sí mismo mas que escribir sobre lo "etno". La auto/etnografía así concebida es una forma de terapia en el mejor caso y una forma de narcismo y una relación autoerótica en el peor caso. Pero porque el sí mismo existe en relación al mundo, se crea en y por la participación en eventos cotidianos y porque la relación humana es inherentemente ética hay preguntas éticas inherentes donde el otro puede resultar herido tanto como el sí mismo.
