Discerning the Dialogical Self: A Theoretical and Methodological Examination of a Nepali Adolescent's Narrative

Abstract

Mikhail BAKHTINs theoretische Konzepte – Heteroglossie, Stimme und Dialogizität – sind von einer herausragenden Bedeutung für die Untersuchung persönlicher und sozialer Komponenten der menschlichen Entwicklung, und zwar im besonderen für die Untersuchung der Identitätsentwicklung innerhalb (unterschiedlicher) kultureller Welten. Bisher sind methodologische und analytische Verfahren zur Rekonstruktion von "Stimmen" in individuellen Selbstdarstellungen noch vergleichsweise unerforscht. In unserem Beitrag werden wir zu zeigen versuchen, wie BAKHTINs Konzepte in einem narrationsanalytischen Ansatz verwandt werden können, der die Untersuchung kulturbezogener Identitätsbildung und Positionierung zum Ziel hat. Wir verdeutlichen dies am Beispiel der selbstbezogenen Narrationen eines nepalesischen Jugendlichen, die im Rahmen einer großen ethnographischen Studie in einer ländlichen Gemeinschaft in Nepal erhoben wurden. Es soll – in einem engen Nebeneinander von Theorie und Methode – gezeigt werden, wie Personen ihnen verfügbare kulturelle und soziale "Stimmen" verwenden zur Kreation ihres Selbstbildes und zur Antizipation ihrer künftigen sozialen Position in ihrer Kultur. Unsere Studie der jugendlichen Narrationen legt nahe, dass soziale "Stimmen" gewählt und transformiert werden zur (Re-) Konstruktion vergangener, gegenwärtiger und zukünftiger Selbstbilder und kultureller Bedeutungsgehalte. Im Mittelpunkt des Beitrages steht die Bemühung, Forschende auf theoretische Konzepte und auf methodische Verfahren aufmerksam zu machen, die wesentlich dazu beitragen können, diese "Stimmen" und ihre Inszenierung wahrzunehmen und zu verstehen.

Mikhail BAKHTIN's ideas of heteroglossia, voice, utterance, and dialogism are important theoretical concepts for investigating relations between social and personal facets of human development, especially the development of identity or self-understandings in cultural worlds. Yet methodological and analytic procedures for discerning voices in individuals' self-representations are relatively unexplored. In this paper, we discuss how BAKHTIN's ideas can be used in a type of narrative analysis that focuses on the construction of individual identity and positionality within cultural worlds. We use an empirical example from one Nepali adolescent's narration of self, collected as part of an extensive ethnographic study in a rural community in Nepal, to illustrate the conjunction of theory and method in discerning how individuals orchestrate the voices from their cultural and social worlds to create distinctive images of self and to envision their (future) social positions. Our examination of this narrative indicates that self processes orchestrate and transform social voices for past, present and future forms of self-understandings and cultural meanings. The primary foci in this paper are the theoretical concepts, methods and analysis that aid the researcher in discerning and understanding these voices and their orchestrations.

Las ideas de Mikhail BAKHTIN acerca de la heteroglosia, voz, expresión y dialogismo, constituyen conceptos teóricos importantes para investigar las relaciones entre facetas sociales y personales del desarrollo humano, especialmente el desarrollo de la identidad o autocomprensión en mundos culturales. No obstante, los procedimientos analíticos y metodológicos para discernir voces en las representaciones individuales del self, están aún relativamente inexploradas. En este trabajo discutimos cómo las ideas de BAKHTIN pueden ser utilizadas en un tipo de análisis narrativo que se focaliza en la construcción de la identidad individual y su posicionamiento dentro de mundos culturales. Empleamos un ejemplo empírico, basado en la narración del self de un adolescente Nepali, recopilado como parte de un estudio etnográfico extenso en una comunidad rural de Nepal, para ilustrar la conjunción de teoría y método para discernir cómo los individuos orquestan sus voces a partir de sus mundos sociales y culturales para crear imágenes distintivas del self y para vislumbrar sus (futuras) posiciones sociales. Nuestro examen de esta narrativa indica que los procesos del self orquestan y transforman voces sociales para formas pasadas, presentes y futuras de autocompresnión y significados culturales. El foco primario de este trabajo son los conceptos teóricos, métodos y análisis que ayudan al investigador a discernir y comprender estas voces y sus orquestaciones.
