Abstract

Sprache und Gestik werden traditionell getrennt gesehen (verbales und averbales Verhalten). Neuere Ansätze jedoch erkennen ihre unauflösliche Verbundenheit an und sehen Sprache und Gestik als "Körpern in Interaktion" hervorgebracht. Das fordert zu einem völlig neuen Verständnis von beidem heraus. Ich versuche an die älteren Arbeiten des Psychoanalytikers Sandor S. FELDMAN zu erinnern, der gestische Manierismen seiner Patienten beobachtete und sie als Zugang zu ihren seelischen Konflikten ansah. Genau diese Absicht verfolgt eine Formulierung des Psycholinguisten McNEILL, dem Herausgeber eines Bandes zum Thema fast ein halbes Jahrhundert später. Gestik aber ist darüber hinaus in kulturelle und historische Kontexte eingebettet, wozu die anderen hier besprochenen Bücher von renommierten Historikern (SCHMITT sowie BREMMER & ROODDENBURG etwas zu sagen haben.

Language and gestures are traditionally viewed. New approaches try to combine them and see language and gesture as produced by interacting, and embodied minds challenge our understanding of what language is. I try to remind readers of the work by Sandor S. FELDMAN who as a psychoanalyst began to observe gestural manierisms of his patients and considered them a "window to the mind". This formulation than is used by psycholinguist McNEILL, editor of a volume focusing on this theme half a century later. However, gestures are is also embedded in cultural and historical contexts as well, to which the two other books by well known historians (SCHMITT, and BREMMER & ROODDENBURG) refer to.

Lenguaje y gestos tienden a ser vistos de un modo tradicional. Las nuevas aproximaciones intentan combinarlos y ver al lenguaje y a los gestos como producidos en la interacción, y en las encarnaciones mentales, desafíando nuestra comprensión de lo que el lenguaje es. Yo trato de recordar a los lectores los trabajos de Sandor S. FELDMAN que fue un psicoanalista que comenzó a observar en sus pacientes los manierismos gestuales y a considerarlos como "ventanas de la mente". Esta propuesta es usada por el psicolinguista McNEILL quien editó un volumen focalizado en el tema, medio siglo después. Sin embargo, la gestualidad también está enclavada en la cultura y en el contexto historico, tal como hacen referencia los otros dos libros de los bien conocidos historiadores (SCHMITT, and BREMMER & ROODDENBURG)
