Review: Paul-Thomas Kandzia & Thomas Ottmann (2003). E-Learning für die Hochschule. Erfolgreiche Ansätze für ein flexibleres Studium

Abstract

Die Vorstellung ist verlockend. Studieren unabhängig von Zeit und Raum. Mit dem Konzept einer virtuellen Universität erscheint dieses Szenario realistisch. Insbesondere die stetige Weiterentwicklung der technischen Möglichkeiten gibt berechtigten Anlass zu dieser Hoffnung. Doch die Realität sieht anders aus. Zwar gibt es eine Vielzahl von Einzelprojekten, die sich – meistens im Pilotcharakter – mit der Entwicklung und Umsetzung von multimedial unterstützten Lehrveranstaltungen beschäftigen, doch ein fächer- und hochschulübergreifendes Konzept ist nur schwer zu entdecken. Auch das VIROR-Projekt, welches in dem Sammelband von KANDZIA und OTTMANN beschrieben wird, ist ein solches Einzelprojekt. Dennoch gibt es interessante Einblicke in die Problematik der Errichtung einer virtuellen Hochschule. Insbesondere finanzielle Aspekte bilden das Hauptproblem. So ist bis heute nicht gesichert, ob Teile des Projekts bzw. das Projektteam nach Ablauf der Förderungsdauer von fünf Jahren weiterfinanziert werden können. Selbst bei der Durchführung der einzelnen Projekte spielten die finanziellen Mittel eine entscheidende Rolle. So konnten beispielsweise einige Projekte nur teilweise umgesetzt werden, da keine Mittel für den Erwerb eines leistungsfähigen Servers oder anderer Hard- und Software zur Verfügung standen. Überhaupt stellte die technische Vernetzung der verschiedenen Hochschulen ein grundlegendes Problem dar, da verschiedene Systeme und Softwareprodukte eingesetzt wurden, die erst im Rahmen des Projekts harmonisiert werden mussten. Doch trotz dieser und anderer Probleme, wie z.B. die unterschiedliche Medienkompetenz der Studierenden, zeigt das VIROR-Projekt positive Ansätze für die Zukunft. Eines scheint jedoch klar zu sein, nur hochschulübergreifende Lösungen haben in der Zukunft eine Chance. Insellösungen werden hingegen vom Markt verschwinden.

The concept is fantastic: studying independently of time and space. Within this notion of a virtual university, this scenario appears realistic. In particular, the continual advancement of technical possibilities gives credence to this aspiration. The reality of it, however, looks different. In fact, there is a multiplicity of single projects (mostly pilot), but a connection between the technical and the university is hard to find. The VIROR project, described in the anthology by KANDZIA and OTTMANN, is such a single project. Nevertheless, it does contain some interesting concerns about the establishment of a virtual university. In particular, financial aspects comprise the main problem; insecurity remains about whether parts of the project and/or the project team will get the opportunity to continue the work. Another fundamental problem is created by the technical cross-linking of the various universities involved, due to different systems and products being used and the need to harmonize them. Despite these and other problems, (like the different media authority of the students), the VIROR project shows positive beginnings for the future. Clearly, only solutions used by different universities at the same time will have a chance in the future. Isolated solutions will disappear from the market.

El concepto es fantástico: estudiar independientemente del tiempo y del espacio. En esta noción de una universidad virtual, este escenario parece realista. Particularmente, el continuo avance de las posibilidades técnicas da crédito a esta aspiración. Pero la realidad luce diferente. En efecto, hay una multiplicidad de proyectos individuales (en su mayor parte pilotos), pero es difícil encontrar una conexión entre lo técnico y la universidad. El proyecto VIROR descrito por KANDZIA y OTTMANN en la antología es uno de esos proyectos. No obstante, este proyecto contiene algunas cuestiones interesantes relativas al establecimiento de una universidad virtual. Los aspectos financieros, particularmente, constituyen el problema principal; hay inseguridad de si ciertas partes del proyecto y/o el equipo del proyecto tendrán la oportunidad de continuar el trabajo. Otro problema fundamental tiene que ver con las compatibilidades técnicas de las diferentes universidades involucradas debido a los diferentes sistemas y productos que usan y a la necesidad de compatibilizarlos. A pesar de éstos y otros problemas (por ejemplo, los diferentes medios de autoridad de los estudiantes), el proyecto VIROR muestra comienzos positivos para el futuro. No hay dudas, sólo las soluciones que sean empleadas por varias universidades al mismo tiempo tendrán oportunidad en el futuro. Las soluciones asiladas desaparecerán del mercado.
