Making thinking visible with Atlas.ti: computer assisted qualitative analysis as textual practices

Abstract

Wie entsteht eine neue Qualität, die als "soziologisches Verstehen" bezeichnet werden kann, im Prozess der qualitativen Datenanalyse? Die (konventionelle) methodologische Antwort auf diese Frage lautet: durch mentale Prozesse und konzeptuelle Arbeit. In meinem Beitrag schlage ich eine zusätzliche, eher soziologische als methodologische Sichtweise vor, genauer: eine Sichtweise, die der zeitgenössischen Wissenssoziologie verpflichtet ist. In diesem Sinne verstehe ich qualitative Datenanalyse als ein Set materialer Praktiken. Beispielhaft ausgehend von der Methodologie der Grounded Theory (GTM) und der Analyse-Software Atlas.ti versuche ich zu zeigen, dass Denken und Handeln auch in diesem spezifischen Bereich untrennbar verbunden sind, und dass eine wissenssoziologische Perspektive hilft, sonst schwer greifbare Prozesse besser nachzuvollziehen. Software ist dann nicht mehr ein einfaches Kodier- und Suchwerkzeug, sondern wird zur komplexen virtuellen Umgebung für körperliche und praxisbasierte Prozesse der Wissensgenerierung. Und auch die GTM erscheint in einem teilweise neuen Licht, wenn sie nicht (nur) als Set methodologischer und theoretischer Konzepte diskutiert wird, sondern (auch) als das, was wir praktisch tun, wenn wir Daten analysieren. GTM wird auf diese Weise kompatibel mit radikal-konstruktivistischen, textuellen und teilweise sogar post-strukturellen Paradigmen der Interpretation (von denen sie sich lange entfernt zu halten versucht hat).

How is a new quality of reading, which we call "sociological understanding", created during the process of qualitative analysis? A methodological (conventional) answer to this question usually speaks of mental processes and conceptual work. This paper suggests a different view—sociological rather than methodological; or more precisely a view inspired by a contemporary sociology of science. It describes qualitative analysis as a set of material practices. Taking grounded theory methodology and the work with the computer programme Atlas.ti as an example, it is argued that thinking is inseparable from doing even in this domain. It is argued that by adopting the suggested perspective we might be better able to speak of otherwise hardly graspable processes of qualitative analysis in more accountable and instructable ways. Further, software packages would be better understood not only as "mere tools" for coding and retrieving, but also as complex virtual environments for embodied and practice-based knowledge making. Finally, grounded theory methodology might appear in a somewhat different light: when described not in terms of methodological or theoretical concepts but rather in terms of what we practically do with the analysed data, it becomes perfectly compatible with the radical constructivist, textualist, or even post-structuralist paradigms of interpretation (from which it has allegedly departed by a long way).

Lo que llamamos "entendimiento sociológico", como una nueva calidad de lectura, ¿de qué forma se crea durante el proceso del análisis cualitativo? Una respuesta metodológica (convencional) a esta pregunta, suele hablar acerca de procesos mentales y trabajo conceptual. Este artículo sugiere un punto de vista diferente, sociológico en lugar de metodológico; o más precisamente, un punto de vista inspirado en la sociología contemporánea de la ciencia. Describe el análisis cualitativo como un conjunto de prácticas materiales. Al tomar el trabajo con el programa Atlas.ti y la metodología de teoría fundamentada como un ejemplo, se argumenta que pensar es inseparable de hacer, incluso en este dominio. Se argumenta que al adoptar la perspectiva sugerida podríamos ser capaces de hablar en forma más apropiada acerca de procesos de análisis cualitativo que son difíciles de abordar de otra manera. Además, los programas de software serían entendidos no solo como "meras herramientas" para codificar y recuperar, sino también como complejos ambientes virtuales para hacer conocimiento corpóreo basado en la práctica. Finalmente, la metodología de teoría fundamentada podría representarse en una perspectiva diferente: al describirse no en términos metodológicos o en conceptos teóricos si no en términos de lo que prácticamente hacemos con los datos analizados, lo cual es perfectamente compatible con los paradigmas constructivista radical, textualista, o aún post estructuralista de interpretación (desde los cuales ha supuestamente salido para un largo camino).
