Photography as a Performance

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag berichte ich von einem Projekt, in dem Fotografie als ethnografische Forschungs-, Präsentations- und Disseminationsmethodik zum Einsatz kam. Das Projekt war Teil eines qualitativen Methodenkurses, in dessen Rahmen Promotionsstudent/innen lernten, visuelle Daten zu erheben und auszuwerten. Hierzu gehörte, dass sie ihr eigenes Leben mithilfe von Fotografien darstellen und reflektieren sollten. Diese Fotografien, die die Studierenden selbst machten, dienten – versehen mit kurzen Titeln – als einzige Datenquelle. Es wurde jedoch ersichtlich, dass für eine Analyse die Fotos ohne jegliches textliche Material nicht reichten. Schriftliche Statements wären hilfreich gewesen, um den Kontext der Fotos und die Intention der Fotografierenden nachvollziehen und verstehen zu können. Ich komme hiervon ausgehend zu dem Schluss, dass eine Ethnografie, die sich nur auf Fotos beschränken würde, nicht möglich ist; der Einbezug weiterer Datensorten ist für eine sinnvolle Analyse unerlässlich. Dennoch ermöglichten das Fotografieren und die Präsentation der Fotos in der eigenen Studie den Teilnehmenden, ihre Identität als Promotionsstudent/innen visuell zu konstruieren und sichtbar zu machen.

This is a study of photography as performance and as an ethnographic research and dissemination method. This project was part of a qualitative research methods course where doctoral students learned to collect and analyze visual data as well as what happens when they engage in a study of their own lives using photography as the main tool. Photographs, taken by the students, with short titles, constituted the only data. Analysis of the photographs without any text proved to be difficult. Written statements in addition to the titles complementing the photographs would have helped in creating the context for understanding the photographs and thereby more clearly communicating the intent of the photographers. The results indicate that an ethnography study based only on photographs would not be possible. Photography needs to be used together with other kinds of data. However, the making and presentation of the photographs allowed the students to construct and perform visually their identities as doctoral students.

Este es un estudio de la fotografía como performance, como investigación etnográfica y como metodología de difusión de resultados de investigación. El proyecto que se describe fue parte de un curso de métodos cualitativos de investigación, donde estudiantes de doctorado aprendieron a recoger y analizar datos visuales, así como a entender que ocurre cuando uno entabla un estudio de su propia vida usando la fotografía como principal herramienta. Las fotografías, hechas por los estudiantes y con títulos cortos, constituyen los únicos datos. El análisis de las fotografías sin texto que las explicara, resultó ser una tarea difícil. El haber utilizado descripciones escritas, además de los títulos, para complementar las fotografías, podría haber ayudado a crear el contexto para entenderlas y, por tanto, comunicar más claramente las intenciones de los fotógrafos. Los resultados indican que un estudio etnográfico basado solamente en fotografías no es posible. Se necesita hacer uso de la fotografía junto con otros tipos de datos. Sin embargo, hacer y presentar las fotografías permitió a los estudiantes construir y representar visualmente sus identidades como estudiantes de doctorado.
