Work and Family: An Exercise in Mixed Methodology

Abstract

Um die Bedeutsamkeit von Mixed-Methods-Ansätzen zu verdeutlichen, greifen wir auf eine eigene Untersuchung zurück, in die verschiedene Datenquellen eingegangen sind, die üblicherweise einem eher qualitativen und einem eher quantitativen Forschungsstil zugeordnet werden. Wir entschieden uns damit bewusst für eine andere Herangehensweise als die traditionell, zumindest in Mexiko, zur Untersuchung von Arbeit übliche: anstelle der Hauptbezugnahme auf statistische Daten analysierten wir zunächst qualitatives Datenmaterial zu einer Gruppe mexikanischer städtischer Mittelschichtfrauen. Zur Integration der unterschiedlichen Datenquellen konstruierten wir eine Typologie mittels quantitativer Daten, die zuvor in der qualitativen Studie erarbeitet worden war und die es erlaubte, Bezüge zwischen vier Verlaufskurven (Schule, Arbeit, Heirat, Kindererziehung) zu verdeutlichen.

In order to present an exercise showing the importance of mixed methodology, this paper offers an exploratory approach to the simultaneous use of data sources clearly identified with qualitative and quantitative research styles. In doing so we took as a starting point a different platform than the one traditionally used in the field of labor studies, at least in Mexico. Instead of having as a main frame of reference a statistical database, we first analyzed qualitative information on a group of Mexican urban, middle-class women. One of the means we have found of linking the two sources has been to construct a typology—with quantitative data and similar to one previously elaborated in a qualitative study—to describe the possible links between four life trajectories (school, work, marriage and child-bearing). Combining a quantitative analysis with the results of a previous qualitative study was precisely what made it possible to both enrich and reinforce the proposal of the existence of diversity within homogeneity.

Con la finalidad de presentar un ejercicio que muestre la importancia de la metodología mixta, este texto ofrece un acercamiento exploratorio a la utilización simultánea de fuentes de datos claramente identificadas con los estilos de investigación cualitativo y cuantitativo. Tomamos como punto de partida una plataforma diferente a la tradicionalmente utilizada en el campo de los estudios laborales, por lo menos en México. En lugar de tener como marco principal de referencia una base estadística de datos, analizamos primero la información cualitativa de un grupo de mujeres mexicanas de clase media urbana. Una de las formas que encontramos para vincular las dos fuentes fue construir una tipología – con datos cuantitativos similar a la elaborada previamente en el estudio cualitativo – para describir los posibles entrelazamientos que se presentan entre cuatro trayectorias vitales (escolar, laboral, conyugal y reproductiva). La combinación del análisis cuantitativo con los resultados previos del estudio cualitativo fue precisamente lo que hizo posible enriquecer y reforzar la propuesta de la existencia de la diversidad dentro de la homogeneidad.
