Power, Conflict, and Spirituality: A Qualitative Study of Faith-based Community Organizing

Abstract

Organisierungsprozesse von Gemeinschaften werden meist von Gruppen mit geringer ökonomischer und sozialer Macht initiiert, und in deren Verlauf kommt es zu Empowerment und zu kollektiven Aktionen. Durch diese Aktionen werden diejenigen Gruppen, die die Prozesse tragen, in die Lage versetzt, Einfluss auf gesellschaftlichen Systeme auszuüben, zumeist von Positionen außerhalb oder gegen bereits etablierte Machtverhältnisse und Organisationsstrukturen. Insoweit sind Konflikte diesen Prozessen der Gemeinschaftsorganisation inhärent. In die in diesem Beitrag vorgestellte Analyse sind ausführliche Interviews mit besonders aktiven Mitgliedern von Gemeinschaften eingegangen, in deren Gläubigkeit eine wesentliche Rolle spielt. Die Auswertung zeigte vielfältige Verbindungen zwischen den Dimensionen Macht, Konflikt und Spiritualität. Hiervon ausgehend formulieren wir einige Hypothesen über die Wirksamkeit von Macht und Konflikt in glaubensbasierten Organisierungsprozesse von Gemeinschaften.

Community organizing is a process of garnering power and taking collective action which is often initiated by groups with little individual economic or social power. Through collective action, organizing groups are able to exert influence in societal systems, many times outside or against the direction of existing power structures. As such, conflict is inherent in the community organizing process. The analyses in this article are based on a series of in-depth interviews conducted with highly active members of community organizing that is operated through faith-based institutions. Analyses reveal multiple connections between dimensions of power, conflict, and spirituality. The paper presents these connections and moves toward emergent hypotheses about the functioning of power and conflict in faith-based community organizing.

La organización de comunidad es un proceso de acumular poder y tomar acción colectiva, el cual es iniciado a menudo por grupos con poco poder social o magra economía individual. A través de la acción colectiva, los grupos que se organizan son capaces de ejercer influencia en los sistemas societales, muchas de las veces afuera o en contra de la dirección de las estructuras de poder existentes. Como tal, el conflicto es inherente a los procesos de organización de la comunidad. Los análisis de este artículo se basan en entrevistas a profundidad llevadas a cabo con miembros muy activos de organizaciones que se conducen a través de instituciones basadas en la fe. Los análisis revelan múltiples conexiones entre las dimensiones de poder, el conflicto y la espiritualidad. El artículo presenta estas conexiones y plantea hipótesis emergentes acerca del funcionamiento del poder y el conflicto al organizar comunidades basadas en la fe.
