Mobile Subjects, Mobile Methods: Doing Virtual Ethnography in a Feminist Online Network

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag beschäftige ich mich mit meiner cyberethnografischen Untersuchung über die internationale Frauenuniversität "Technology and Culture" (ifu) im Jahr 2000 und über das hieran anschließend auf Initiative der Teilnehmerinnen konzipierte virtuelle Netzwerk vifu. Ich skizziere zunächst meine methodologischen Überlegungen und einige methodische Herausforderungen, die mit dieser Forschungsarbeit verbunden waren. Zusätzlich befasse ich mich mit diesen methodologischen Überlegungen auch auf einer theoretischen Ebene, indem ich insbesondere die Konzepte "Heimat" und "Zugehörigkeit" hinzuziehe mit Blick auf die Frage, was diese Konzepte im Kontext mobiler Leben(sführung) bedeuten. Ich versuche zu zeigen, in welcher Weise Online-Forschung zum einzig möglichen methodischen Ansatz wurde, um den mobilen Charakter nicht nur der ifu und ihren virtuellen Extension vifu angemessen zu untersuchen, sondern auch um darüber hinausgehend verstehen zu können, wie die Teilnehmerinnen ihre Zugehörigkeit und Mobilität innerhalb ihrer jeweiligen Welten und innerhalb des (v)ifu-Netzwerks aushandelten.

In this article I give an account of my cyberethnographic study of the International Women's University "Technology and Culture" (ifu) 2000 and the network its participants formed in the ifu's virtual extension, vifu. The article offers a description of the methodological considerations and challenges I was confronted with whilst carrying out this research. In addition, I explore these methodological considerations on a conceptual level. Primarily concerned with questions of home and belonging and the question of how these notions figure in contemporary mobile lives, I explore here how conducting online research became the only possible method to adequately reflect the "mobile" nature not only of the event ifu and its virtual extension vifu, but also the ways in which participants negotiate belonging and mobility in their respective worlds and to the (v)ifu network.

En este artículo doy cuenta de mi estudio ciberetnográfico sobre la Universidad Internacional de las Mujeres "Tecnología y cultura" (ifu) 2000 y la red que formaron sus participantes en la extensión virtual de ifu, vifu. El artículo describe las consideraciones metodológicas y los desafíos afrontados durante esta investigación. Además, exploro esas consideraciones metodológicas en un nivel conceptual. Preocupada en un principio por las cuestiones del hogar y la pertenencia y por como esas nociones encajan en la movilidad de la vida contemporánea, exploro aquí como la investigación en línea se convierte en el único método posible para reflejar adecuadamente la naturaleza "móvil" no solo del evento de la ifu y su extensión virtual vifu, sino también las formas como las participantes negocian la pertenencia y la movilidad en sus respectivos mundos y en la red (v)ifu.
