Review: Karl H. Hörning & Julia Reuter (Hrsg.) (2004). Doing Culture. Neue Positionen zum Verhältnis von Kultur und sozialer Praxis

Abstract

Die Rezension diskutiert den unter dem Titel "Doing Culture" veröffentlichten Tagungsband zu einem 2003 stattgefundenen Kongress zur sozialwissenschaftlichen Praxistheorie. Ausführlicher werden dabei die theorievergleichenden und an der Theoriearchitektur der Praxistheorie weiterarbeitenden Beiträge präsentiert. Andere eher empirische oder an Einzelaspekten ausgerichtete Beiträge werden kurz vorgestellt. Den Abschluss bildet eine Zusammenstellung offener Fragen für die Weiterentwicklung der Praxistheorie, die sich aus den in diesem Band versammelten Beiträgen ergeben. Insgesamt gibt "Doing Culture" einen guten Überblick über den aktuellen Stand des "practical turns" in der techniksoziologischen und mediensoziologischen Diskussion. Die – für einen Kongressband durchaus typische – Heterogenität der Beiträge spiegelt einerseits die Bandbreite der Diskussion wieder, zeigt aber auch, dass der Schritt zu einem weit verbreiteten einheitlichen praxistheoretischen Vokabular noch nicht gelungen ist.

The review discusses the proceedings of the 2003 conference on practice theory in the social sciences, published as "Doing Culture". It especially makes room for the presentation of the theoretically oriented parts of the volume—texts either comparing two different theories or working at the further development of practice theory. An overview is given about the other parts of the volume which present case studies or singular aspects. Concluding the review, open questions from the different texts are put together. "Doing Culture" is helpful if one wants to be informed about the current state of the "practical turn" in German-language sociology of technology and media. The heterogeneity of the volume—typical of congress proceedings—shows, on the one hand, the breadth of the contemporary discussion but shows, on the other hand, that "practice theory" as one singular theory with a widely used vocabulary still does not exist.

La reseña discute los trabajos de la Conferencia del 2003 sobre teoría práctica en las ciencias sociales publicadas como "Hacer Cultura". Es relevante la presentación de las partes del volumen donde se discuten dos teorías o donde se desarrolla la teoría práctica. En otra parte se presentan estudios de caso. Al final de la reseña se presentan algunas preguntas abiertas sobre diferentes textos. "Hacer Cultura" es útil si uno desea estar informado sobre el estado actual del "giro práctico" en la sociología de la tecnología y los medios en lengua alemana. La heterogeneidad del volumen – típico de trabajos de Conferencias – muestra, por un lado, la amplitud de la discusión contemporánea pero muestra, por el otro, que la "teoría práctica", como una teoría singular con un ampliamente usado vocabulario aún no existe.
