Review Essay: After the Aftermath: A Reply to Wolff-Michael Roth's Review of Harry F. Wolcott's "Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath" published in FQS 5(1)

Abstract

Dieser Beitrag versteht sich als Erwiderung der Besprechung von Wolff-Michael ROTH zu Harry F. WOLCOTTs Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath, ein Buch, das sich auf Ereignisse bezieht, die durch ein früheres Buch WOLCOTTs – Adequate Schools and Inadequate Education; The Life History of a Sneaky Kid – ausgelöst wurden. Ursprünglich der Überprüfung von Unterschieden zwischen "schooling" und "education" gewidmet, diente dieses Buch als Katalysator für zahlreiche Diskussionen verschiedenster Aspekte qualitativer Sozialforschung. In diesem Beitrag werden zunächst Besprechungen von Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath diskutiert, die sich vor allem auf drei ethische Schlüsselaspekte beziehen (Macht, Intimität und Diskretion). Danach folgt eine genauere Betrachtung der Besprechung von ROTH, um anschließend eine mögliche alternative Lesart von Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath vorzustellen.

This article is written in response to Wolff-Michael ROTH's review of Harry F. WOLCOTT's Sneaky Kid and Its Aftermath, which offers an account of events initiated by an earlier work by WOLCOTT—"Adequate Schools and Inadequate Education; The Life History of a Sneaky Kid." Originally designed to examine the distinctions between schooling and education, the study later became a catalyst for discussion on every aspect of qualitative research. This article examines some of the reviews of the book, focusing on three key ethical issues (power, intimacy, and discretion), followed by a closer look at ROTH's review in particular. Finally, a brief alternative review is presented.

Este artículo es la respuesta a la reseña de Wolff-Michael ROTH sobre Harry F. WOLCOTT del El niño furtivo y sus secuelas, que ofrece un balance de los acontecimientos iniciados por un trabajo anterior de WOLCOTT, Escuelas adecuadas y Educación Inadecuada; la Historia de vida de un niño furtivo. Originalmente pensado para examinar las diferencias entre la escolarización y la educación, el estudio más tarde se hizo catalizador de la discusión sobre los aspectos de la investigación cualitativa. Este artículo examina algunas reseñas del libro, enfocando tres cuestiones claves de la ética (el poder, la intimidad y la discreción), seguido de una mirada más cercana a la revisión de ROTH. Finalmente, se presenta una breve revisión alternativa.
