Qualitative Research in Sociology in Germany and the US—State of the Art, Differences and Developments

Abstract

Es wird ein Überblick über den Entwicklungs- und Etablierungsstand der qualitativen Forschung im deutschen Sprachraum in methodischer Hinsicht gegeben. Nach knappen Bemerkungen zur Geschichte werden die wichtigsten Forschungsperspektiven und Schulen qualitativer Forschung – objektive Hermeneutik, Ethnomethodologie, Narrationsanalysen, Grounded Theory, Lebensweltanalyse, Ethnographie und Cultural und Gender Studies – jeweils vor dem Hintergrund aktueller Entwicklungen skizziert. Der Etablierungsstand qualitativer Forschung wird in Hinblick auf die Verankerung in der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS) und in der International Sociological Association (ISA) sowie auf Entwicklungen im Bereich von Lehr- und Handbüchern und die Gründung darauf spezialisierter Fachzeitschriften behandelt. Als methodische Trends werden die Hinwendung zu visuellen und elektronischen Daten, die Triangulation methodischer Zugänge und die Hybridisierung qualitativer Vorgehensweisen diskutiert. Den Abschluss bilden einige Perspektiven, die in Zukunft in der qualitativen Forschung an Gewicht gewinnen werden bzw. Desiderate der weiteren Klärung darstellen. Neben der Verwendung von Computern und der Klärung der Verbindung von qualitativer und quantitativer Forschung bzw. der diesbezüglichen Grenzen und Probleme sind hier die weitere Klärung der Frage der Darstellung von Vorgehensweisen und Ergebnissen und die Entwicklung angemessener und gleichzeitig verbindlicher Gütekriterien qualitativer Forschung zu nennen. Weiterhin werden Schulenbildung und Forschungspragmatik einerseits und Tendenzen der Klärung und Verklärung methodischer Vorgehensweisen andererseits als aktuelle Spannungsfelder qualitativer Methodendiskussion ausgemacht. Abschließend werden die Internationalisierung der qualitativen Forschung und die Beantwortung der Frage der Indikationsstellung qualitativer Methoden als Desiderate behandelt.

The background of this article is the observation that the methodological discussions about qualitative research in sociology in German-speaking and Anglo-Saxon contexts are quite different. The article gives an overview of the state of the art of qualitative research in terms of its methodological development and its establishment in the broader field of social research. After some brief remarks about the history of the field, the major research perspectives and schools of qualit­ative research—grounded theory, ethno­method­ol­ogy, narrative analysis, objective hermeneutic, life-world analysis, ethnography, cultural and gender studies—are outlined against the background of recent developments. The establishment of qualit­ative research is discussed with reference to the examples of the German and International Socio­logical Associations (DGS and ISA), to devel­op­ments in the area of textbooks, handbooks, and to the founding of specialised journals. Methodologi­cal trends such as the turn to visual and electronic data, triangulation of methods and the hybri­di­sa­tion of qualitative procedures, are discussed. In conclusion, some perspectives are outlined which are expected to become more important in the fu­ture of qualitative research or which are seen as demands for further clarification. Besides the use of computers and the further clarification on linking qualitative and quantitative research, and of the limits and problems of such linkage, further sug­gestions concerning the ways of presenting ap­pro­priate and at the same time compulsory criteria for qualitative research are mentioned. Trends in building schools and developing research prag­matics, on the one hand, and a tendency towards elucidation and mystification of methodological procedures, on the other hand, are identified as tensional fields in methodological discussions in qualitative research. Finally, a stronger inter­na­tionalisation in different directions and answering the question of indication are discussed as needs for the future of qualitative research.

El trasfondo de este artículo es la observación de que los debates metodológicos sobre la investigación cualitativa en sociología en los contextos de habla alemana y anglosajones son bastante diferentes. El artículo realiza una descripción del estado del arte, más allá de la investigación cualitativa en términos de su desarrollo metodológico y de su establecimiento en un amplio campo de la investigación social. Después de breves comentarios sobre la historia de este campo, las principales perspectivas de investigación y las escuelas de la investigación cualitativa (teoría fundamentada, etnometodología, análisis narrativo, hermenéutica objetiva, análisis de mundo-de-vida, etnografía, estudios culturales y de género), se describen las líneas generales de las perspectivas más recientes. El status de la investigación cualitativa se discute con referencia a los ejemplos de las asociaciones sociológicas alemana e internacional (DGS e ISA), a los progresos en el área de los libros de textos y manuales, y a la fundación de publicaciones especializadas. Se discuten tendencias metodológicas tales como el giro a los datos visuales y electrónicos, la triangulación de métodos y la hibridación de procedimientos cualitativos. En conclusión, se analizan algunas perspectivas que esperamos sean más importantes en el futuro de la investigación cualitativa o que exigen una mayor clarificación adicional. Además del uso de ordenadores y de una clarificación posterior para vincular la investigación cualitativa y cuantitativa, y de los límites y problemas de esta relación, se mencionan otras sugerencias referentes a los modos de una presentación apropiada y los criterios obligatorios para la investigación cualitativa. Se identifican por un lado, las tendencias a crear escuelas, desarrollar prácticas de investigación, y la inclinación hacia la clarificación y la mistificación de los procedimientos metodológicos como campos de tensiones en las discusiones metodológicas en la investigación cualitativa, por el otro. Finalmente, se discute una internacionalización más fuerte en diversas direcciones y se responde a la cuestión sobre las necesidades para el futuro de la investigación cualitativa.
