One trend is concerned with demonstrating that former patterns of (experiencing) power relations in urban life dissolve into fluidity and indifference. The other looks at urban intergroup life from a top down perspective and substitutes empirical evidence by teleological arguments. The author proposes, instead, to focus on the effects and side-effects of casual interactions, on interactions of avoidance as well as on spontaneous and social regulated conflicts and their impact on urban intergroup relations. Such a Figurational Conflict Analysis essentially addresses any interaction that reproduces or changes power-structures of intergroup-life in the context of lived diversity in urban spaces. This perspective allows shedding light on intergroup processes that shift local power relations or even lead to open conflict among (migration-related) groups.... view less
