This study presents a critical and reflected state of research on the correlation between the increasing digital integration of production processes (industry 4.0) and strategies of internationalization of production, in particular offshoring of production activities abroad and backshoring of production activities back to the German location. The current trends and developments in the offshoring and backshoring activities of the German manufacturing industry as well as in the digital integration of production processes are comprehensively analysed. If data allow, a specific view is taken on NRW. In addition, the status of possible job effects due to the relocation of backshoring activities are reflected. The study concludes with political recommendations for possible support of backshoring and activities for the digital integration of production processes (Industry 4.0) in Germany.... view less
