Sociology of work and industry has summed up a radical transition in the work world and its regulation since the 1980s. In the course of this transition the significance of work conflicts has also shifted: decentralisation of the work conflict to the company level on the one hand, and its transferral to the individual subject on the other hand. This transition raises fundamental questions about the concept of conflict held by sociology of work and industry. This article focuses on labour conflicts in everyday work and pursues the tradition of addressing conflicts in sociology of work and industry. It pleads for widening the concept of conflict in this subdiscipline by considering perspectives opened by conflict sociology. Conflicts in everyday work were so far grasped primarily as "rest conflicts" in industrial relations. Georg Simmel, the sociological classic, rather points to conflicts as everyday phenomena and emphasises their fundamental importance as starting points of socialization processes. In many ways this terminological extension opens up new analytic perspectives for sociology of work and industry.... view less
