(Autorenreferat)... view less

'In the course of a research project about employment in the nonprofit sector in Austria data was collected inter alia for the field of politics - by a short questionnaire sent via E-mail. The data is valid for summer 2003, and the rate of return reached 76,0 %. Nonprofit organizations that were successful at elections are included, i.e. political parties that delegate elected representatives, as well as - in order to enable comparisons - the public sector, i.e. all elected politicians. The public sector amounts to 43.727 employees, most of them working avocationally and on municipal level (98,2 %!). The by far bigger nonprofit sector reaches 119.312 employees, but only 1,6 % are paid for their work. Especially the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) are based on honorary work. The Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) has a remarkably low number of employees and the Green Party a remarkably high number of part-time employees.' (author's abstract)... view less
