"In acts, representations, discourses and emotions around the topic of breast milk nutri- tion there is an ongoing reconstruction of gendered responsibilities. This is often connected with the inclusion and exclusion of women as mothers and raises the question of (un)equal gender relations. In contrast to the English-speaking world, social science research on infant nutrition, specifically breastfeeding, has only recently become a growing field of research in Germany. This above all concerns to qualitative-practical investigations. Based on this research gap, this study examined the topic from a gender political and ethnographic perspective and analyzed the social practices of professional breastfeeding counselling provided on a postnatal ward. It asked how the mother’s body is worked on in these settings and made functional as a source of nutrition for the baby. The results demonstrate that breastfeeding is conceptualized as a matter of problem-solving and learning, activating an arsenal of support and problem-solving techniques which reduces, fragments and functionalizes the mother’s body and at the same time exposes it as irreplaceable for the growth and well-being of the child."
