The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies is the largest German research institute for
area studies and comparative area studies and is also among the largest in Europe. It is publicly
funded and is a foundation under the civil law of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
The GIGA’s main priority is research on political, economic and social circumstances and developments
in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. It produces high-quality work related to
regional, interregional and global issues.
In addition, the institute supports the advancement of junior researchers, provides expert advice to
politicians and the business sector, and promotes the transfer of knowledge to the media and civil
