"Based on a quantitative research project, the article illustrates current funerary culture in Germany. Due to methodical reasons, burials other than Christian, such as Muslim burials, are not included in the study. The article argues that forms and changes of funerary culture are social constructions, and as such a sociological topic. Diverse forms and rituals of funerary culture reflect major current trends in social development: secularization, rationalization, economization accompanied by processes of casualization, detraditionalization, individualization, aestheticizing of everyday life, new lifestyles and milieus. These manifest themselves in a new diversity and polarity: minimalistic forms, which are criticized to represent an 'Entsorgungsmentalität', are being opposed by forms that perform social positions and aesthetic preferences."
