"The concept of work-life balance appears to be highly promising when it comes to improving the balance between professional and private life, and promoting a more gender-neutral way of framing this issue. The article investigates the question of how this demand for gender-neutrality presents itself in the academic field, which is traditionally characterised by a blurring of the boundaries between work and life. Based on a qualitative-empirical study at an Austrian university we argue that the assumption of incompatibility between academia and family life has become a gendered and excluding discourse in the field: Work-life balance is reduced to balancing childcare and a career and this is primarily assigned to women, who are then denied the status of fully dedicated academics."
