Western receptions of the Orient are characterized by a unilateral constructed Orient reality, whose production is based on an antagonistic-dichotomizing logic. Orient images produced in this way point out that cultures are depicted as opposed to each other and ultimately aim at formation of hegemonic relationships. By ascribing strangeness to cultures and religions dominance claims can be asserted effectively. In this context, constructions of strangeness serve a certain purpose and developed a powerful and unchallenged continuity. The persistence of stereotypes about Islam and the concomitant construction of a seemingly insurmountable strangeness can be explained firstly by transformation of Orient imaginations to ubiquitous images of Islam, and secondly by reinforcing a pejorative perception and assessment of a declared strangeness, which is exclusively associated with Islam. This consciously perceived kind of strangeness unfurls his powerful impact especially in anti-Islamic discourses in the contemporary society. The present paper takes up these contoured thoughts, concretizes and problematizes them by questioning the unquestioned meaning of construction and perpetuation of strangeness.... view less
