Abstract 'Die vorliegende Studie ist Teil I einer zweiteiligen Darstellung der rumänischen Bemühungen, die eigene kommunistische Vergangenheit aufzuarbeiten. Diese Bemühungen gestalteten sich außerordentlich schwierig: Zwar erlebte Rumänien am Jahresende 1989 die aufwühlendste Revolution, die nichts vom 'samtenen' Charakter vergleichbarer Umstürze im übrigen Osteuropa aufwies, doch wurden danach binnen sieben postkommunistischer Jahre alle hoffnungsvollen Anfange vertan, verwässert, behindert, verfälscht. Seit November 1996 hat Rumänien eine neue politische Führung, der eine wirkliche Aufarbeitung zuzutrauen ist. Auf diese neuen Ansätze wird im zweiten Teil der Darstellung detailliert eingegangen, während der erste Teil die Jahre unter Ion Iliescus Führung schildert, in denen eine halbherzige 'Aufarbeitung' des Ceausescu-Erbes im Grunde nur verdeckte, daß man zu einer wirklichen Auseinandersetzung mit Geist und Form des Kommunismus in Rumänien weder fähig noch willens war. Beide Teile basieren auf allgemein zugänglichen Quellen vorwiegend rumänischer Provenienz.' (Autorenreferat)

'The present study is Part I of a two-part examination of Romania's efforts to come to terms with its own communist past. These efforts have proved extremely arduous: though at the end of 1989 Romania experienced the most tumultuous of revolutions, which shared none of the 'velvet' nature of contemporary upheavals elsewhere in Eastern Europe, within seven postcommunist years all the hopeful beginnings had been diluted, diverted, squandered, perverted. Since November 1996 Romania has had a new political leadership which shows signs of really intending to delve into the country's post-war history. These recent developments will be discussed in detail in the second part of the study, while this first part deals with the years under Ion Iliescu's leadership, during which a half-hearted 're-assessment' of Ceausescu's legacy served only to cover up for the fact that the new wielders of power were neither able nor willing really to grasp the nettle of exposing and facing up to the spirit and form of communism in Romania. Both parts are based on generally accessible sources, mainly of Romanian origin.' (author's abstract)
