Abstract 'Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Gründe, Typen, Erscheinungsformen sowie die Geographie ethno-territorialer Konflikte (im folgenden als ETK) in den GUS-Staaten und im Baltikum. Sie befaßt sich mit den Subjekten der ETK und den Besonderheiten von Gebietsansprüchen. Es gibt Konflikte wegen umstrittener Territorien mit Forderungen nach Veränderung der historischen Grenzen, Konflikte aufgrund des administrativen (nationalstaatlichen) Status des ethnischen Territoriums, Konflikte wegen der Verdrängung ethnisch fremder Bevölkerung aus ihrem Siedlungsgebiet, Konflikte der Repatriierung, die mit der Rückkehr von einst aus der historischen Heimat vertriebenen Völkern verknüpft sind. Die ETK werden nach ihren Erscheinungsformen unterschieden: Konflikte von Ideen, Konflikte politischer Institutionen, Konflikte mit Massenaktionen und militärische Konflikte (interethnische Kriege). Am Beispiel Zentralasiens werden die historischen Wurzeln und Faktoren der Verschärfung der ETK analysiert.' (Autorenreferat)

'The present Report examines the causes, the types and manifestations, and the geography of ethno-territorial conflicts (hereinafter reffered to as ETCs) in the countries of the CIS and in the Baltic region. It deals with the subjects of ETCs and the peculiarities of territorial claims. There are conflicts about disputed territories demanding changes to historical borders, conflicts about the administrative (national state) status of ethnic territories, conflicts about the displacement of ethnically different peoples from their traditional settlement areas, repatriation conflicts triggered by the return of peoples previously displaced from their historical homelands. The ETCs are distinguished by their manifestation forms: conflicts of ideas, conflicts of political institutions, conflicts involving mass popular actions, and military conflicts (inter-ethnic wars). The Report takes Central Asia as an example to analyse the historical roots of and the factors intensifying ETCs.' (author's abstract)
