"Indigenous movements as well as social movements against megaprojects like dams, mining projects and the cultivation of sugar cane and palm oil for the production of agro sprit, have been very active in postwar Guatemala. During the last ten years, however, a shift from claims for identity issues to an increased defense of natural resources can be observed. In Guatemala, the intensified struggle for maintaining the living environment, which can be monitored in all of Latin America, resorts to a posited opposition between indigenous and western approaches to life. Indigenous movements, since the end of the civil war, best fit the theoretical concept of 'new social movements', yet the concept, coined among others by Alain Touraine, can only be applied in a limited way and is only conditionally useful for explaining social processes in Guatemala."
