Two theses on the sociology of adolescents are compared in light of research results showing that formal education and school leaving certificates have become more important for adolescents. The first criticizes that adolescents attend school for too many years and accordingly are kept from obtaining work experience for too long. The second defends school as an educational moratorium. In this qualitative study interviews with students from a vocational college were used to capture more precisely the perspective of students on the biographical importance of school attendance."
